The Curated Watch List

Sasha Wulf's Pick:

Sigourney Weaver in ALIENS

Highlight: A blockbuster Sci Fi movie with Sigourney Weaver in the lead role of Ellen Ripley, a fierce female protagonist and sole survivor of expedition, along with Jones the cat. Sigourney’s female prowess is riveting.

Jennifer Mondfrans's Pick:

Aubrey Plaza in EMILY THE CRIMINAL

Highlight: Aubrey Plaza portrays Emily, a financially challenged young woman, who turns to crime for survival. The film highlights Aubrey’s intense but yet subtle performance. We see Aubrey portray vulnerable yet assertive as she's swept into a life of crime and quickly adapts into a new dark persona with cunning and deceptive ease.

Heather Fowler's Pick:

Meryl Streep in SOPHIE’S CHOICE

Highlight: Hollywood icon and EGOT recipient Meryl Streep shines as the stunning star she will become in the role of Sophie when Streep gives a groundbreaking performance in this 1982 film where she portrays a character torn between the complex trauma of her past and an increasingly difficult present.

Cari Sudmeier's Pick:

Helen McCrory in PEAKY BLINDERS

Highlight: Helen gives life  to Aunt Polly for five seasons of Peaky Blinders as the ever loyal matriarch of the Irish family gang, no act too dark or dangerous to protect her family. McCrory gives a consistently intense performance through her run of the series.

Kiki Watkins's Picks:

Meagan Goode and Jurnee Smollett in Eve’s Bayou

Highlight: Meagan Goode and Jurnee Smollett portray sisters living in the Louisiana town of Eve’s Bayou embroiled in family drama. Their portrayal as sisters showcases their dynamic acting strengths as they weave through conflict and learn to lean on each other as Eve comes of age while navigating her gift of foretelling the future.

Marie Wetmore's Pick:

Geena Davis in THELMA AND LOUISE

Highlight: In this film, we watch Geena Davis’s character, Thelma, transcend from a disheveled housewife, innocent and skittish, to an empowered unstoppable woman as Davis takes on the character of Thelma with grit and self discovery, on the run with Susan Sarandon's character, her cohort Louise, as they escape a lifetime of being objectified as women and turn into two vigilante criminals on the run.

HEAT Hot Snack for the Viewing Session:

This episode, we feature a movie-watching Hot Snack offered by co-host Jennifer Mondfrans.

Bar Snack Brussels Sprouts Steeped in Olive Oil and Fish Sauce

This only takes 15 minutes to make, then you let the dish rest for an hour to steep in those flavors.

There are only 4 ingredients!

Kosher salt

Brussels sprouts, trimmed at stalk end

Extra-virgin olive oil

Vietnamese fish sauce

Step 1: Bring a large post of water to a boil, and season with coarse kosher salt until salty as the sea. You should actually get a spoon and taste the hot water for salinity. It’s the only way to know what you’ve got in the pot.

Step 2: Add the brussels sprouts, and cook for about 10 minutes, until they are just cooked through. Still firm but not al dente.

Step 3: Drain sprouts, and quickly transfer to a heatproof shallow bowl, and while hot, douse them with good quality olive oil ( 2 tablespoons) and sprinkle fish sauce over them judiciously (1 and ½ tablespoons). Stir and taste one. Add another splash of fish sauce, if needed. And let the sprouts cool completely, resting and steeping for an hour or so, before serving at room temperature.
